Battle Net - The communications system that allows Marines to communicate with their small units and higher commands during military maneuvers.
Chbit - These are classical information bits, which are referred to as Chbit’s for short, are a real feature of physics as we understand it. We need these Chbit’s to hold any message we wish to transmit over interstellar distances. The problem with science, as it was understood before the arrival of the White Knights, was that while Qubits can be transmitted faster than light speed, they cannot be used to piggy back classical information bits. This led many Earth scientists to conclude that FTL communications were impossible. However, with the arrival of the more scientifically advanced White Knights, and an understanding of chbit’s, communication over large distances became something feasible for a more instantaneous conversation. These chbits are a field that connects qubits and classical information bits in FTL conversation.
Qubits - These are quantum bits, referred to as Qubits for short, are real feature of the physics, as are classical information bits (which we need to hold any message). The problem with an Earth based scientific understanding was that they understood that while Qubits can be transmitted faster than light speed, they cannot be used to piggy back classical information bits. This mistaken believe made them conclude that FTL communications were impossible. However, with the arrival of the more scientifically advanced White Knights, and an understanding of chbit’s, communication over large distances became something feasible for a more instantaneous conversation. These chbits are a field that connects qubits and classical information bits in FTL conversation.
Combat Drugs - These cocktails of psychostimulants and endocrine effectors blend to the individual requirements of the Marine receiving them and allow a soldier keep in the fight long past the point of a normal human’s ability to remain conscious.
Crèche - The place where the infant offspring of the Human Marines are raised with the firm understanding that they will ultimately become Marines themselves. In fact, everything in their lives, from birth onward, is geared with this in mind. These units are habdisks that are scaled larger and with different internal configurations than what is used to house a Marine Section.
Cryo Pod - A place where personnel are temporarily frozen in a state of suspended animation so they might survive interstellar space travel. While in a cryo unit personnel wear only a thin paper tunic that would disintegrate during freezing. This device isn’t completely without risk, and some troops die due to resuscitation attrition.
Digi-Sheets - A paper thin computer capable of displaying video or literature to the operator, similar to a modern computer or tablet.
Gravitic Engine - An engine which manipulates the laws of gravity to allow a ground vehicle to sit above the ground and appear to be floating in place.
Flek - A form of pollution released by the White Knights on their own planet. It is a mutating cloud used by the White Knights to change themselves, allowing them to celebrate their mutations. Sadly, most of these mutants require culling. This gas is often pompously referred to as The Sacred Mists of Renewal by the White Knights and their constituent species.
Hab-Disks - A co-ed, self-contained living compartment within Human Marine Corps cities that houses military units. The standard configuration houses two full Marine Companies, but they are separated down into several 8 man rooms. These small rooms within the habdisks house one entire section, two four man fire teams. The rooms can house more if they are configured with bunk-beds or are made larger. In several instances we see them configured as briefing rooms for the Marine Cadets (Book 1) to receive instructions while they are in their training phases. A habdisk will be very self-contained with a firing range and a gym. They offer some protection from catastrophic failings of the city with which they are located, and are buried deep enough underground to protect the inhabitants from the deadly radiation that exists on the surface. This has led many survivors of the disastrous Tranquility Campaign in Renegade Legion (Book 3) to speculate as to whether or not the possibility exists for survivors in Beta City to be left alive in the flooded city. More specifically, the habdisks are designed to protect the inhabitants for a set amount of time before automatically drilling to the surface and spilling out a full company of Marines ready for combat after any catastrophic failure that occurs. According to Arun and his fellow cadets in Marine Cadet (Book 1) the chain of command is theoretically not allowed to listen in to the Marine hab-disk conversations but nobody really believes that. The thought behind this is that Marines need a place to speak freely and vent, without being insubordinate. There is another unspoken rule among those barracks-mates that share a hab-disk, sometimes called diskmates, that you pretend not to notice when people move between bunks during the night. In Marine Cadet (Book 1) we learn that each unit has a specific numeric code that serves as a key of sorts, allowing access to the facility when it’s otherwise locked.
Mind-Talk or Mind-Link - A method of talking between two people without using words. This is done telepathically, mind to mind.
Nanobots - A micro-machine that can facilitate healing within the body, externally track a being by sitting on their clothes or any other object near the subject it is surveilling. These miracle machines are within Marine Fraser McEwan and he gives them to his twin brother Arun McEwan. These machines are sometimes referred to as nanowire.
Nanoscale Transport Robots - A way to “gift” your pheromones and memories to another receptive.
Nano-Spy - An extremely tiny device used to gather intelligence. It is believed that the White Knights use this technology to maintain control of their empire.
Pheromone Emitter - A device that is used to communicate with alien races that operate under a pheromone communication system. These devices have been known to save the lives of those wearing them from alien races that might view them as invaders that must be eliminated.
Reconnaissance Drone - A drone sent out to gather intelligence on enemy combatants in space (also called spy probe). Sadly these drones were noticeably noisy, without even the basic stealth capabilities of a Marine Battlesuit. These drones do, however, have a kill mode which gives them a minimal offensive capability, though it’s likely that this capability was intended to be purely defensive.
Shower Tunnel - The cleaning process used by Marines, whereby they stand on a conveyor similar to ones used by cars on Earth. These troops clean themselves in stages along the way through the tunnel and come out the other side clean and ready to redress themselves in the uniform of the day. The substance used to spray these soldiers clean also contains protective oils used to protect them from the dangerous levels of UV rays on the service of Tranquility, allowing them to function in an inhospitable environment. These oils also contain scavenger nanites which suck the ionizing radiation out of the air, thus shielding the Marines from them. Like many of the soldiers that have existed before them, for troopers in the Human Legion shower time is normally a relaxing period where soldiers of all genders relax and enjoy the camaraderie of their peers.
Spy Probe - A drone sent out to gather intelligence on enemy combatants in space (also called reconnaissance drone). Sadly these drones were noticeably noisy, without even the basic stealth capabilities of a Marine Battlesuit. These drones do, however, have a kill mode which gives them a minimal offensive capability, though it’s likely that this capability was intended to be purely defensive.
Voice Box - A piece of equipment, shaped like a box, worn to facilitate inter-species communication. It acts as a universal translator for the White Knight subservient client races.
Zero Point Power Generator - A portable generator used by Marines in the field, or when there is a catastrophic power failure.
